Fluoride

Strengthening Tooth Enamel

The use of fluoride is an important part of preventing cavities. It works by strengthening the outer surface of the tooth, called enamel. At Pediatric Dentistry of Fredericksburg, we use fluoride therapy during routine cleanings. We also help to educate and instruct patients about the importance of using this treatment at home.

What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in soil, water and even air. In dentistry, the mineral is one of the most effective treatments for preventing dental cavities. Due to its oral health benefits, it is sometimes added to water supplies—including some bottled waters—and dental products such as toothpaste and mouth rinse. When it makes direct contact with your teeth, the mineral strengthens tooth enamel by making it more resistant to acid attacks. It can even help to reverse early tooth decay.

Preventative Use

Using fluoride toothpaste at home can help prevent cavities and tooth decay. In children under the age of three, use a tiny amount of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for children ages 3 to 6. It is important to monitor your child’s teeth brushing to make sure they are doing it correctly and effectively. Children should always spit out their toothpaste and not swallow it.

Fluoride Treatments At Our Office

A typical part of your child’s 6-month checkup and cleaning is a fluoride treatment. During your child’s appointment, our team will apply it directly to the teeth in the form of a foam, gel or varnish. The treatment contains higher concentrations of the mineral than what is found in your toothpaste or mouthwash. The process is quick, only lasting a few minutes. Afterward, our dentists may recommend not rinsing, eating or drinking for some time to allow the mineral to properly absorb. While most children should receive this treatment every 6 months, our team will help determine the best schedule for your child.

Getting The Right Amount Of Fluoride

The perfect amount of the mineral prevents cavities without causing fluorosis. Using fluoride toothpaste and drinking community water is usually enough. In certain cases, Dr. Edwards or Musselwhite may recommend supplements in the form of drops or lozenges if your child needs more fluoride. However, most children do not need supplements.

What Is Fluorosis?

Fluorosis occurs in people who have ingested too much fluoride. Typically, this happens in children and is characterized by white spots on the teeth. In more advanced stages, the teeth turn brown. While this condition is not dangerous, it can be avoided. Our team is happy to provide suggestions on proper use to avoid fluorosis.
